Everything you Need to Know About Applying Mascara

It’s hard to know where to start when looking for the right mascara. Just a quick run through the drugstore and you’ll see more types of mascara than you could wear in an entire year, so how can one possibly know which one is right for you? I’m here to help, but first, let’s start with the basics.

Washable vs. Waterproof

Washable mascaras are made with higher water content, so they are easier to remove. Washables tend to be more flexible on the lashes, which means they’re better for the health of your lashes.

Waterproof mascaras have a lower water content, and some contain none at all, making them last through sweat, rain, tears, or dampness of any sort. They’re not bulletproof, though.

Properly Removing Your Mascara

If you want to have any lashes left in a few years, then taking a few extra seconds when taking off mascara is imperative. Roughly removing mascara and not using a removal product can easily pull lashes out and damage the root, potentially making regrowth harder or stopping it completely.

I take my makeup off by first using a makeup-removing wipe on everything but my lashes. Then, I gently apply an oil cleanser to my lashes to break the mascara down and use the makeup wipe to wipe it all away.

Black looks good on everyone

Black doesn’t discriminate and looks great with every skin tone and hair color, yes, even blondes. The whole point of applying mascara is to make your lashes visible.

Use an eyelash curler

Because why wouldn’t you? They may look a little intimidating, but eyelash curlers curl your eyelashes. Crazy, right? For years I’ve been using the Shu Uemura Eyelash Curler. Yes, the price is a little steep but it’s worth the investment.

Start at the base

Hold your wand parallel to the floor, and move the mascara wand from the base to the tip of the lashes. To prevent clumping, move the brush back and forth in a wiggle motion. Always apply mascara from underneath the lashes.

Let them dry

If you’re going for a dramatic look, give your lashes a chance to dry before applying multiple coats of mascara. This will also help with clumping.

Use a "primer"

If you're still wanting to amp up your lashes try using a primer. Mascara primers boast that they nourish your lashes and promote growth, strength, and vitality. They enhance your lashes to make them look long and luscious.
